Networking
UDS has been connecting computers ever since computer users have had two or more computers, and wanted to network them together to create a local area network (LAN). Doing so enables your computers to share, among other things, files, peripherals and now the Internet.
UDS simply connects you with affordable, highly reliable networking technology and products. Our range of products build networks that link people to information in small networks, across large networks, and over the Internet. We supply Ethernet, Fast Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet connectivity products to keep cost of ownership low by delivering quality and back it with superior warranties and free technical support.

Networking Basics
HUB
Here the first computer prints to the printer, but the message is broadcast to all of the computers on the network. A hub works like a telephone party line. Only one computer can talk at a time.
Switch
Now the first computer and printer make a private connection during printing, while the 4th computer transfers a file to the 5th computer over another connection. A Farallon Switch works more like our modern phone system. Computers can talk with each other on private connections so that multiple conversations can be carried on at the same time.

10base2 (coax)
10baseT
10 Megabit per second baseband Ethernet specification using two paris of twisted-pair cabling (Category 3, 4 or 5): one pair for transmitting data and the other for receiving data. 10BaseT has a distance limit of approximately 100 meters per segment. Requires a hub or switch.
100BaseT
100 Mebabit per second baseband Fast Ethernet specification using UTP wiring. Like the 10BaseT technology on which it is based, 100BaseT sends link pulses over the network segment when no traffic is present. However, these link pulses contain more information than those used in 10BaseT. Requires a hub or switch.

1000BaseT
1000 Mebabit per second baseband Fast Ehternet specification using UTP wiring. Like the 10BaseT technology on which it is based, 1000BaseT or gigibit ethernet sends link pulses over the network segment when no traffic is present. However, these link pulses contain more information than those used in 100BaseT. Requires a hub or switch.

Cross Over Cable
This type of cable can connect one computer to another without the use of a hub. Always very useful to have one of these cables lying around.
